Teri's Homemade Dog Food Recipe
This is the basic recipe that we use for all our dogs. We may make adjustments for older dogs, but as long as they are growing puppies, gestating or lactating mothers and active working dogs with a physically demanding job, this is what we recommend.
3 cups brown rice or barley
1 cup whole flax seed
2 cups animal protein such as chicken quarters (bones removed), beef liver, beef cuts, turkey or lamb
2 cups yams, carrots
2 cups peas/broccoli
1/4 cup coconut oil
Seasonings - 1 tsp. sea salt and 2 tsp. turmeric powder (optional)
Bring 4 quarts of water to boil, add salt
Add rice and flax seed
Return to boil, then turn down to simmer and add animal protein source
Cover with lid and wait 15 minutes before adding the following:
Yams and carrots. Cook for 15 minutes, then add the broccoli and peas and cook 15 minutes to complete. Add coconut oil after you shut off the heat.
This recipe is intended for mixing with dry kibble. We mix the wet with the dry 50/50 and watch our dogs chow down.
Note: If your dog has a tendency to gain weight easily you may want to reduce the rice intake and replace it with millet seed, which is higher in protein - in which case you wouldn't need as much animal protein. As well, you may not want to add any fat except in a fish oil supplement form.
Precautions: Always introduce new foodstuff slowly over a period of one week, increasing new food by 15% each day.
